#64 Invest in rehabilitation, not punishment

Although investing millions in staffing may increase prison security, it is a temporary fix that does not address the causes of violence in prisons.

On November 12, 2017, The News & Observer’s Editorial Board pointed to the recent deaths of prison employees in two North Carolina prisons as examples of why increased staffing and security is desperately needed in all prisons across the state. They write, “the frightening thing about this is that staff shortages are something inmates are aware of, and that some might try to take advantage of in terms of smuggling contraband or planning escapes.”

Lyle May vehemently disagrees. In this opinion piece, he points out their logical inconsistencies and uses substantive research to illuminate what he identifies as the root of the problem. Just like the insidious call for more guns in the wake of mass shootings, May argues that such tragic incidents inside prisons should not lead to more of the same, but instead to the recognition that such incidents are, as May writes, “an indictment of the whole penal system.”
